ivDefinition

What is a sleeping song?

sleep·ing song noun

  1. A slow, soft song played at bedtime to help someone settle and drift off; a lullaby.
  2. Here: an instrumental Purrple Cat song picked for being gentle, warm and steady from the first note to the last.

“One more sleeping song and then lights out.”

Five signs of a good sleeping song

  1. i.

    One gentle tune

A sleeping song has a simple melody you can follow without trying, or no melody at all: soft keys or a slow pad that just floats.

  2. ii.

    No words

Lyrics pull your attention back up. Every song here is instrumental.

  3. iii.

    Slow and soft

A relaxed tempo and quiet, round sounds: soft piano, warm pads and deep, gentle bass, nothing sharp or bright.

  4. iv.

The same from start to end

No drops, no builds and no sudden changes, so nothing surprises you just as you're drifting.

  5. v.

    Then quiet

The best sleeping song ends and lets the room go silent. Our player can stop after one song, play the next, or sing the same one again.

What we don't claim
  • No binaural beats, no special frequencies and no promises. These are ordinary, gentle songs.
  • Many people find a calm song at bedtime helps them settle. That's the whole claim.
  • If sleep troubles go on for weeks, for you or your child, talk to a doctor. A song is a comfort, not a treatment.
vFree use

Free to use, with credit.

Making a lullaby video, a bedtime story podcast or a sleep stream? Every sleeping song here is free under CC BY 4.0. Here are the rules in full.

Free to use

  • All social media. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, X and the rest, including monetised videos, lullaby and bedtime videos, sleep streams, Shorts and Reels.
  • Other projects too. Podcasts, bedtime-story and meditation content, games, apps, ads, client work and school projects.
  • Edit it to fit. Cut, loop, slow down or fade songs, and say it's edited in the credit.
  • Credit Purrple Cat. “Music: Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0”.

Never

  • Never re-upload or release it on streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer or Tidal, through a distributor or any other route.
  • Never release remixes, samples or covers of it on streaming services either.
  • Never register it in Content ID or claim other people's videos with it.
  • Never pass it off as your own or sell the songs as they are.

Why so strict about streaming? Re-uploads, remixes, samples and covers on Spotify, Apple Music and other services get fingerprinted, and then false Content ID claims hit everyone who uses the music properly. Purrple Cat Self Releases have no Content ID, so there's nothing to clear when you use them as intended.

viFAQ

Questions at bedtime.

What is a sleeping song?
A slow, soft song played at bedtime to help someone settle and drift off, like a lullaby. On this site every sleeping song is an instrumental track by Purrple Cat, dreamy chillwave and ambient downtempo lofi, picked for being gentle, warm and steady from start to end.
How is tonight's sleeping song chosen?
From a nightly rotation of the 140 sleepiest songs in the book. Your own date picks the song, so everyone gets the same song on the same night, and it changes at midnight where you are. Tomorrow's and the rest of the week's songs are listed under tonight's.
Where can I find a list of sleeping songs?
There are six lists of 15 sleeping songs each: for kids, for adults, rainy nights, starry nights, cozy winter and short songs. The Songbook lists all 343 songs, numbered, in grid or list view.
Are these sleeping songs okay for babies and kids?
They're gentle instrumental songs with no words and nothing sudden, and the For little ones list collects the softest and steadiest of them. Keep the volume low and the speaker across the room rather than next to the cot or pillow. They aren't a sleep treatment; if you're worried about a child's sleep, ask your doctor or health visitor.
Do the songs have lyrics?
No. Every sleeping song here is instrumental.
Can I play one song on repeat all night?
Yes. Tap the “Then” button on the player until it says “then again”, and the same song plays over and over. “Then quiet” stops after one song, and “then next” carries on through the list or album.
How does the bedtime song picker work?
Tell it who the song is for, what the night is like and how long you want to listen. It scores every song in the book on those answers plus its measured tempo, softness, warmth and steadiness, then picks one of the best fits, or a short run of songs that get gently softer. Tap “Another song” for a different pick.
What are the sigils on each song?
Each song's plate is drawn from its own sound: its loudness from start to finish is wrapped into a closed curve, its tempo sets the number of petals, the inner moon gets smaller the warmer the song sounds, and the little star marks its loudest moment. No two are the same.
What do the moons mean?
Sleepiness, from one to five moons: how slow, soft, warm and steady a song measures compared with the rest of the book. Five moons are the sleepiest.
Can I use these songs in my videos?
Yes. They're free on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, X and all other social media, including monetised videos, lullaby videos, sleep streams and Shorts. Put “Music: Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0” in the description. Purrple Cat Self Releases have no Content ID, so there's nothing to clear.
Can I upload them to Spotify or other streaming services?
No. Never re-upload or release the music, or remixes, samples or covers of it, on Spotify, Apple Music or any other streaming service, through a distributor or any other route. Those uploads get fingerprinted and cause false Content ID claims for everyone who uses the music properly.
Are these the full songs? Can I download them?
Yes. Every player plays the whole song, never a short excerpt, and every one of the 343 songs has a free MP3 download (192 kbps, tagged with the title, album and licence). Each list can also be downloaded as an .m3u8 playlist.
What does the music sound like?
Dreamy chillwave and ambient downtempo lofi by Purrple Cat: soft piano, warm synth pads, deep sub-bass and slow, steady grooves. Fully instrumental.
Does this site track me?
No. No cookies, analytics or ads. Your volume and “Then” choice are saved only in your own browser.
